Mary had been imprisoned on the orders of Elizabeth I. She was executed at Fotheringhay Castle in England for her part in a plot to assasinate Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1586, a major plot to murder Elizabeth was discovered, and Mary was implicated by her participation in the plot which would have made her Queen of England.

She was convicted for her role in the plot and sentenced to death. On this day in 1587, Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded for treason.

This would be a bloody week in history as Lady Jane Grey is beheaded February 12 and Catherine Howard would be beheaded on February 13.
