Six bombs went off across Baghdad as the US Embassy Baghdad was formally dedicated and opened on January 5, 2009.
The embassy complex came at a cost of more than $700M US and covers 104 acres on the Tigris River.

The United States had maintained an embassy in Iraq until closing in 2003 prior to the invasion of Iraq on direction of President George W Bush. A temporary embassy was set up in July 2004 in the former Republican Palace of Saddam Hussein.
