Clown Face Spiders

Yes Virginia, they’re really are arachnids that look like clowns.

Clown Face Spiders, or the Theridion grallator, more commonly known as the “happy face spider” are colorful spiders native to Hawaii.

Paradise’s Clown Face Spiders

Four Hawaiian islands (Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Hawaii) host the Clown Face Spiders, where it is known in the local language as nananana makaki’i, or the “face-patterned spider.” (The word grallator in its specific name is Latin for “stilt walker,” a reference to the spider’s long and spindly legs.)

T. grallator is a small spider with a body size less than 5 millimeters long making it difficult for us to see unless we are specifically seeking them out.

In other good news, the Hawaiian happy face spider is not poisonous to humans, nor is it prone to bite.
